French Drains are a form of exterior basement waterproofing. A Trench is dug a ways away from the basement, and a weeping tile drain - covered with gravel - is placed inside. Surface water and ground water is pulled away from the basement wall, undermining hydrostatic pressure, and is drained into a ditch or dry well. French drains are installed to prevent damage to basement foundation walls by relieving hydrostatic pressure next to the wall that builds up after rain falls.
French drains are also typically installed behind retaining walls to divert water away from them to relieve ground water pressure.
Not all basement waterproofing contractors are the same. It's important you go with someone reputable and highly-experienced/trained. Not all jobs are the same, so without proper training and extensive experience, a service provider could ineffectively waterproof your home causing future leaks and possible structural damage.
